Isuma, the award-winning film collective co-founded by Zacharias Kunuk, OC, and Norman Cohn has been celebrated as an incubator of Inuit creativity and talent for over three decades. Isuma’s is a model steeped in experimentation and collaboration, and it felt only fitting that this momentous occasion be marked by a project rooted in those same values. This special issue of the Inuit Art Quarterly is unlike any other previously published IAQ in that it features writing done exclusively by Inuit contributors. Its creation emerged from Dr. Heather Igloliorte’s Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership: The Pilimmaksarniq/Pijariuqsarniq Project Summer Institute, organized by Concordia University, which brought students and faculty together in Venice to witness and respond to this important occasion. The Pilimmaksarniq/Pijariuqsarniq Project aims to address the low number of Inuit in arts leadership roles in Canada and foster the next generation of Inuit curators, editors, archivists and other cultural workers.
