Michelle R. Baikie

Baikie is a photographer from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL and she does a wide range of fine art, abstract, landscape and portrait photography. Her works have been exhibited in Canada and internationally. Baikie is an artist, an educator and educational researcher.

Through her ancestry, education and experience, Baikie brings to her work a sensitivity and ability to convey the importance of cultural preservation. Her dedication has been recognized by many awards including the 1992 School of Visual Communication Cultural Diversity Incentive Award for the exhibition entitled, Footprints of My Ancestors. Her photograph Spirits was published in First, a catalogue for the exhibition of Indigenous art in Newfoundland and Labrador. Baikie continues to sharpen her artistic eye by observing and capturing the colourful surroundings she finds in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. In 2008, Baikie produced a book entitled, Spiritual Journey: A Collection of Limited Edition Surreal Photographs. Baikie also has two images included in the touring exhibition SakKijâjuk: Art and Craft from Nunatsiavut. 

Baikie has several degrees and a great interest in art, science and education. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts based in London, England and a member of their Canadian Chapter. Baikie recently became a member of the Society for Photographic Education in 2016.

2003: Received a Bachelor of Education from Memorial University in St. John's, NL.
1994: Received a Bachelor of Science from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, United States.
