Biography

Lucy Tulugarjuk is an actress, filmmaker, writer and throat singer. Originally from Iglulik, NU, Tulugarjuk now lives in Montreal, QC. She is well known for her starring role in the film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001) as well as her work on Maïna (2001). She has been involved in the film industry for over 20 years, working in a variety of roles including Assistant Director to Zacharias Kunuk, OC on the film Maliglutit (Searchers) (2016) and as a make-up artist, costume designer, casting director and a television host [1]. She is also the Executive Producer for Nunavut Independent Television Network (NITV).

Tulugarjuk made her directorial debut with the film Tia and Piujuq (2017), which she also co-wrote as well as acted in alongside her daughter Nuvvija Tulugarjuk and aunt Madeline Ivalu. The film had its Ontario premier during the 19th annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in Toronto, ON. The film follows the story of two girls, Tia, a Syrian girl who has recently settled in Montreal with her family, and Piujuq, an Inuk girl spending the days with her grandmother in their summer camp outside of Iglulik [2]. Tia stumbles across a magic portal that transports her to Piujuq’s camp where the girls quickly become friends, spending their time connecting over games, Inuit stories and encounters with powerful beings.

Tulugarjuk is also a founding member of Inuusiq, the Iglulik Youth Drama group that became Artcirq, and has been involved with Arnait Video Productions as a producer, writer and actress. In addition to her work in film, Tulugarjuk is a celebrated throat singer that has performed internationally as an ambassador for Inuit culture [3]. She is noted for her many talents and community activism.
