Viral TikToks, IG reels and hashtags, oh my! Keeping up with the latest social media trends so you can keep your art practice visible can be tricky, so let’s unpack it together.

This workshop features a conversation with fashion designer Taalrumiq, singer and actress Julia Ulayok Davis, and textile artist Shelly O’Gorman!

Each of these social media aficionados discuss their lessons learned from engaging with their thousands of followers across different platforms and the never ending waves of social trends. They dish out their tried and true tips for connecting with the community most relevant to your practice, while maintaining digital well--being.

  • Julia Ulayok Davis
    Julia Ulayok Davis is an Inuk singer, actress and composer, currently residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Treaty 1 Territory. She began her journey on TikTok in 2020, posting singing videos as well as videos about her Inuit culture. In 2021, she began posting original songs from her new musical in the works, Aqqaq. Since then, Julia and her work on Aqqaq have been featured on several CTV morning segments as well as radio shows and podcasts based in Winnipeg.

    She hopes to create an “Inuit Musical” inspired by her own experiences with her culture, as well as inspiration from traditional Inuit legends and her family. She is absolutely honoured and thrilled to be participating in the TikTok Accelerator for Indigenous Creators! Recent acting credits and upcoming projects include Nikwatin Siypiy / Frozen River (MTYP), The Wizard of Oz (Rainbow Stage), SkyMed (Paramount+) and Burden of Truth (Eagle Vision).

  • Taalrumiq
    Taalrumiq is an Inuvialuk & Gwich’in Artist, Fashion Designer, Content Creator and Cultural Educator from Tuktuuyaqtuuq. She shares Inuvialuit culture with the world through fine art, Inuvialuit couture garments and accessories, and compelling educational digital content on popular social platforms.

    She inspires others to reclaim and celebrate Indigenous identity and encourages healing of intergenerational trauma. In the tradition of her long matrilineal line of expert Inuit Seamstresses and Gwich’in Jijuus, Taalrumiq creates with the same talent, passion, skills and traditional materials as her ancestors with a unique and contemporary vision.

  • Shelly O’Gorman
    Shelly O’Gorman is a textile artist from Iqaluktuuttiaq (Cambridge Bay), NU, who specializes in kalikuks, a type of traditional-style top, which she makes with her mother Clara Evalik and sister Traci O’Gorman and sells online through their business, Nukariit Creations.

    An extended quarantine in Edmonton, AB, in 2020 with a sewing machine and one of her mom’s patterns led O’Gorman to create her first kalikuk. When she posted it online and someone immediately reached out asking to buy it, she realized there was a large interest from women and men. Together, she and her sister began Nukariit Creations (nukariit means “sister”) and it blew up. Today, Nukariit has grown to include her mother as well, with all three producing tops to sell at their own pace. On top of her artistic practice, O’Gorman is a full time student and mother of three.
