Sarah Jensen

Sarah Jensen was born in the small community of Makkovik, NL. Jensen has had a long career as a seamstress and is revered as a crafter and educator in her community of Hopedale, NL [1]. She is an avid volunteer and shares her knowledge of traditional sewing techniques and collaborates with younger makers, such as emerging artist Veronica Flowers. Jensen uses traditional materials such as sealskin, fur and moosehide for her designs, with beadwork for decoration. Her mitts in grey sealskin are both warm and water repellant, with flower beadwork on the front. Finished with a fur trim and a leather braid, the mitts combine fashion and function. 

Sarah Jensen’s work has been featured in the touring exhibition SakKijâjuk: Art and Craft from Nunatsiavut (2015), curated by Dr. Heather Igloliorte. Jensen has also been featured in a documentary titled Handcrafted Hopedale (2015). She continues a longstanding tradition of sewing and craft today.
