Biography

Raised in Kinngait, NU, Ricky Jaw started carving when he was 9 years old, learning from his father, master carver Matthew Saviawjuk Jaw. He enjoyed watching and learning from his father’s carved walruses, muskox, and transformations. Ricky’s first carving was a dog team pulling a qamutik, which has become his most carved item. While he produces works relating to traditional subject matter, he also he also enjoys creating pieces relevant to contemporary Inuit life, such as skidoos and even motorbikes. Jaw is a frequent attendee at the Great Northern Arts Festival the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association (NACA) Festival.
