Biography

Paula Menarick is an Inuk and Cree multidisciplinary artist and seamstress based in Chisasibi, QC. Mastering a wide range of art and craft, she primarily works in beadwork and embroidery, as well as with skins and hides, such as moosehide and caribou leather. Initially inspired by her grandmother to learn to create and sew as well as through culture classes offered to her in school, Menarick has gained much of her skill set through her family and community, while continually teaching herself new techniques as her practice has expanded. Much of what she produces is wearable, such as clothing, mitts and delicate earrings made from beads and hide, but she also creates decorative arts such as embroidered panels that can be framed and hung. Menarick tends to favour floral designs, citing that many of the flowers that are ever-present in her work have actually been passed down to her from her grandmother.

Blending Cree and Inuit influences makes Menarick’s work unique as she uses her work to connect to both aspects of her identity. This is immediately apparent in some of her pieces, including a beaded headband that, while crafted in an Inuit style, is embellished with Cree floral designs. She has also created garments for her family for important occasions and ceremonies that are a blend of both cultures.

“I'm into anything related to crafting, I just love creating,” Menarick says of her varied practice, “I can lose myself or hours in my sewing room and I have a wide variety of interests. I’m even learning to do woodwork! Recently, I learned how to make a traditional Cree cradleboard for my grandson and he just loves it.” [1]

Currently, Menarick works closely with the Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute in Oujé-Bougoumou, QC, where she has served as the Collections Manager in the past. Employing her extensive knowledge of textile construction, beadwork and art, she frequently creates contemporary examples of traditional garments and regalia that are displayed in the center so that visitors and community members can learn directly from the objects. Menarick is also a registered nurse and facilitator in her community and often provides programming on crafting and sewing for new and expectant mothers.
