Niome Veevee

Niome Veevee is a textile artist born and raised in Panniqtuuq (Pangnirtung), NU. Veevee studied at Attagoyuk school in Panniqtuuq. [1]

Veevee primarily makes felt wallhangings. Although she occasionally produces rectangular pieces which hang from a tie at their top, Veevee more often makes stretchers and tethers her material to the frame with yarn, shaping it like a drying sealskin. The resulting ‘pelts’ are then sold with their frame. 

Wallhanging (n.d.) is one such stretched work, using green thread both to tie the felt to frame and to tie-in with the central background colour. Instead of appliqueing different colours of fabric to form her images, Veevee relies on densely stitched thread, which gives her figures a 3-D separation from their background. Enhancing this juxtaposition are the minimally detailed backgrounds, which rarely feature context for the setting. In this instance, sparse red lines in the foreground may indicate ocean waves or just texture on the tundra.

In addition to her felt wallhangings, Veevee also makes a variety of accessories, from crocheted 'Pang' hats to ivory and sealskin jewelry.
