Mariano Aupilardjuk was an accomplished artist and highly respected Elder from the community of Kangiqliniq (Rankin Inlet), NU. In a career spanning several decades, Aupilardjuk was known for his drawings, was a carver, a drummer, a storyteller, and he even dabbled in acting, playing an Inuk Elder in the 2003 film The Snow Walker [1]. He is also the father of Pierre Aupilardjuk, a well-known ceramicist.

Aupilardjuk’s commitment to sharing Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit – traditional knowledge – was rooted in his desire to link the past, the present and the future of Inuit in Nunavut. Like many Inuit, Aupilardjuk was not just an artist, but a key member of his community who advised many people, from local residents to politicians, on understanding and using traditional ways and how they could be applied in modern society [2]. In addition to his knowledge sharing with Inuit politicians, the artist also contributed to the creation of the official territorial mace which is on display at the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in Iqaluit [3].

He was awarded the National Aboriginal Achievement Award in 2001 by Indspire in the category of Culture, Heritage, and Spirituality [2] as well as the Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award in 2006 [4]. He also recieved an honorary degree in education from the University of Prince Edward Island in 2009 [5] and Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 [6]. Following his death in 2012, a commemorative mural featuring his likeness titled Aupilardjuk: rest in paradise was installed in his honour [7].

Mariano Aupilardjuk était un artiste accompli et un aîné très respecté de la communauté de Kangiqliniq (Rankin Inlet), au Nunavut. Au cours d’une longue carrière de plusieurs décennies, Aupilardjuk était reconnu non seulement pour ses dessins, mais aussi pour ses talents d’artisan sculpteur, de batteur et de conteur; il s’est même essayé au cinéma, ayant joué le rôle d’un aîné inuit dans le film de 2003 intitulé « The Snow Walker ». Il est également le père de Pierre Aupilardjuk, un céramiste bien connu. L’engagement qu’a pris Aupilardjuk à partager l’Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit – le savoir traditionnel – était fondé sur son désir de lier le passé, le présent et l’avenir des Inuits du Nunavut. Comme beaucoup d’Inuits, Aupilardjuk n’était pas qu’un artiste; il était aussi un membre clé de sa communauté qui conseillait bien des gens, des habitants aux politiciens, sur la compréhension et l’emploi des méthodes traditionnelles et leur application dans la société moderne. En plus de partager ses connaissances avec les politiciens inuits, l’artiste a également contribué à la création de la masse territoriale officielle qui est exposée à l’Assemblée législative du Nunavut à Iqaluit. En 2001, Indspire lui a remis le Prix national d’excellence décerné aux Autochtones dans la catégorie Culture, patrimoine et spiritualité [2] puis, en 2006, il s’est vu décerner le prix de la justice réparatrice Ron Wiebe. Il a également reçu un doctorat honorifique en éducation de l’Université de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard en 2009 et la Médaille du jubilé de diamant de la reine Elizabeth II en 2012. À la suite de son décès en 2012, une peinture murale commémorative à son image intitulée « Aupilardjuk : Le repos au paradis » a été installée en son honneur.
