Biography

Erica Jacque is a textile artist from Postville, Nunatsiavut, NL, who crafts miniature dioramas as well as embroidering earrings and hoop art. Inspired by artists like Kenojuak Ashevak and Annie Pootoogook, Jacque recreates iconic art in her embroidery. After learning the basics of embroidery in school, Jacque dove into this new art form, her skills blossoming similar to the nature she portrays. An appreciation for the humble native plants and people of Nunatsiavut, Jacque has an affinity for delicate and intimate portrayals of Inuit life. In addition to embroidery, her eye for detail shines in miniature dioramas made with recycled materials. A hand-sewn grape-sized beanbag, knitted blankets, matchbox-sized bookshelves and a stamp-sized Starry Night painting are just a few things neatly placed in her tiny houses.

Jacque was inspired to raise money after hearing that workers at the Nain Safe House would stay late to take care of the women and hygiene products were scarce. Auctioning her embroidered earrings on Facebook to raise money, her way of pushing for positive change. “I’m really into making earrings right now… it brings awareness to the Nain Safe House if people ask where you got your earrings from. It was quite the little expense to go purchase feminine hygiene products, and I imagined how stressful that could be to women and girls less fortunate than me.” [1]

Always eager to learn and develop her style, Jacque browses artists on Instagram. Noting Veronica and Vanessa Flowers, Amber Griffiths, Renae Al-Fdeilat, Cheyenne Kewageshig and Katrina Ford as inspirations for her work. Jacque also has a family filled with artists and hopes that one day her grandmother, Polly Jacque, will teach her how to make a winter coat.
