Sewing and making clothing for family members has long been a part of Coral Harbour, NU based seamstress Elizabeth Ningeongan since she was young and learned pattern-making and sewing techniques from her mother, aunt and sisters in the cabin she grew up in. When she had children of her own, she recalls creating a jacket for her daughter, complete with embroidery of her own design, representing an inventive spirit that reveals itself in her original patterns and designs. Aside from jackets and parkas, Ningeongan also enjoys making mitts and kamiit and sometimes creates accessories such as sealskin purses she decorates with traditional tattoo patterns.
After applying to be a featured designer with the second iteration of Canada Goose’s Project Atigi line of parkas, she was selected and produced an original design for the famous outerwear label. Describing the recent recognition of her work as an “honour and a privilege” [1], Ningeongan remains committed to practicing her craft and collaborating with her daughter on her new sewing supplies business, Ujaraatsiaq Garments, in Coral Harbour.
