Alookie Korgak

Alookie Korgak is a self-taught artist from Iqaluit, NU, who creates jewellery and accessories like handbags, purses, necklaces, earrings and bracelets that feature traditional 
materials with modern twists.

Korgak began making jewellery in 2017 after seeing images of Indigenous earrings online. “It 
inspired me to go to a local craft store to buy my first materials with little knowledge of the 
trade,” she said; “but I just knew that was what I wanted to do.” [1] She now works with a wide range of materials, including sealskin in different finishes (natural and commercial), naulaq (shave sealskin turned into leather), polar bear and fox fur, whalebones and seal bones to create her pieces. In 2020 she expanded her practise to include sealskin and leather kamiit. 

Korgak sells these jewellery pieces through the digital marketplace. Her primary medium is sealskin statement pieces that blend Inuit culture with contemporary fashion, such as stylized versions of tail fins or silhouettes imitating Arctic animals including seals. Frequently, she will mix a variety of different furs beads and skins to create statement jewellery, inspired from Inuit culture and art.
