Join us on Aug. 25 at 5pm ET/2pm PT for a thought-provoking virtual discussion with Inuit artists whose works are being featured at the 2023 Bonavista Biennale!

The conversation will delve into the “Host” theme within the context of Inuit art, highlighting the ways in which their artwork across diverse mediums serves as a conduit for stories of hospitality, exchange, and connection. It will be moderated by storyteller and artist Ossie Michelin, who is also a member of the Biennale’s Curatorial Advisory.

Several of the participating artists have been commissioned by the Biennale: A new mural by emerging artist Jessica Winters is being jointly commissioned by Bonavista Biennale, the Inuit Art Foundation, Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership: The Pilimmaksarniq / Pijariuqsarniq Project, and Onsite Gallery at OCAD University, where it will also be presented in winter 2024.

In addition, the Biennale has commissioned a large “in-situ” whale bone carving by Billy Gauthier, artist, activist, and environmentalist; as well as a playful outdoor installation by Couzyn van Heuvelen, a sculptor best known for his large-scale interpretations of hunting and fishing implements.

The panel will also be joined by Shirley Moorhouse, a multifaceted heritage crafts artisan, fabric artist, printmaker and painter known for her gorgeous mixed-media wall hangings, as well as Glenn Gear, an animator, filmmaker and visual artist whose most recent installation, Ivaluk Ullugiallu-Sinew and Stars, is currently showing at The Rooms.
